Suspicious growths are often small and painless, patients are not aware of them. Once detected with the VELscope, Dr. Crawford uses OralCDx Brush Biopsy technology to obtain a sample of these spots or lesions so they may be examined for cancerous cells or other abnormalities. He simply swabs the brush against the affected area several times to obtain a sample of tissue cells. This process is generally painless and does not require a local anesthetic or sedation. The sample is then sent to a laboratory where a pathologist reviews it and reports the results to Dr. Crawford. If the results are abnormal, he will refer the patient to an oral surgeon for further care.
